Mexican Serapes (poncho)

Kids craft make a Mexican Serapes / ponchoTo get in the spirit of your Mexican celebration, let the children make serapes (Mexican blankets) to wear over their shoulders.

We can use butchers paper or any other large piece of paper (approximately 40cm wide) and is long enough to hang over the front & back of the child. The child can then design, paint, colour, or paste with scrap materials the serape & then they can cut fringe on the bottom edges. You could also make these out of old white sheets.

Maracas

Kids crafts - make a Water Bottle MaracaUse two small paper plates that have been decorated. Fill with beans, seeds, beads, pebbles etc. Staple the 2 plates together.

Alternatively you can use an empty plastic bottle (softdrink, cordial etc), fill with beans, seeds, beads, pebbles etc and screw the lid back on, after you decorate the bottle it can be shaken to make lots of noise.

Mexican Flowers

make mexican paper flowersGive each child 3-5 different colored squares of tissue paper and have them place them one on top of another. Show the children how to fold them in a fan folded shape and then wrap a twist tie around the middle of the fan folded paper. Have each child carefully open his flower by pulling the different colors of paper upwards or downwards to separate each layer.
